  21.    This diskette contains drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who
  22.    have a Sound Blaster 1.5 or 2.0.
  23.  
  24.    If you obtained the drivers and programs mentioned in this file as a ZIP
  25.    file from a bulletin board, please unzip the contents into a diskette
  26.    labeled

  50. III. Installing the drivers
  51. ---------------------------
  52.  
  53.    1. Start Windows v3.1.
  54.  
  55.    2. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  56.  
  57.    3. You should have the following driver names in the Installed Drivers
  58.       list:
  59.  
  60.             MIDI Mapper
  61.             Timer
  62.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  63.             [MCI] Sound
  64.  
  65.       If you have other drivers installed, please remove them with the
  66.       REMOVE button and restart Windows before continuing.  If any of these
  67.       drivers are not listed, please add them before continuing.  (See your
  68.       Windows manual for details on adding these drivers.)  Make sure you
  69.       restart Windows after making changes to the driver list.
  70.  
  71.    4. Click on the ADD button.
  72.  
  73.    5. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  74.  
  75.    6. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  76.  
  77.    7. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the driver disk.
  78.  
  79.    WARNING! - The following steps will OVERWRITE your existing MIDIMAP.CFG
  80.               configuration.  If you want to keep your existing
  81.               configuration, click on CANCEL and make a copy of MIDIMAP.CFG
  82.               before continuing the installation process.
  83.  
  84.    8. Select Sound Blaster MIDI Synthesizer and click on OK.
  85.  
  86.    9. Windows will ask if you want to use the current MIDIMAP.CFG or install
  87.       the new MIDIMAP.CFG - Select NEW and continue on.
  88.  
  89.   10. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.  The default
  90.       I/O address is 220H.  If you have changed the jumper on your card to
  91.       240H, then select 240H.
  92.  
  93.   11. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  94.       DON'T RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  95.  
  96.   12. Select Sound Blaster v1.5 or Sound Blaster v2.0 Wave and MIDI, depending
  97.       on which card you own (Quick way to tell:  The v2.0 has three 1/8" mini
  98.       jacks - Line In, Mic In, and Audio Out, and the v1.5 only has two 1/8"
  99.       jacks - Mic In and Audio Out).  Make your selection and click on OK.
  100.  
  101.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address, Interrupt, and
  102.       DMA channel. Choose the settings your card is set to and continue on.
  103.  
  104.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  105.       RESTART.  Windows will then restart.
  106.  
  107.   15. Two additional Windows applications are provided.  They are MMJBOX.EXE and
  108.       MMCBOX.EXE, please copy them into your Windows directory.
  109.  
  110. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  111. -----------------------------------------------------
  112.  
  113.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here are some things to
  114.    check before you call Technical Support.  Also, be sure to read the
  115.    "Important Notes" section below.
  116.  
  117. ** 1. If you installed Windows 3.1 using the "Express Installation,"  Windows
  118.       scanned your hard disk for programs to be installed.  As a result, older
  119.       versions of the Chatterbox, Jukebox, and Mixer were installed if they
  120.       were on your hard disk at the time of installation.  Please remove these
  121.       icons.  To do this, click on the icon once to select it, then press the
  122.       delete key.  Windows will ask you for confirmation.  Repeat for each icon.
  123.  
  124.    2. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the Windows SYSTEM
  125.       directory against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  Make
  126.       sure that the correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  127.  
  128.    3. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least have the
  129.       following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:
  130.  
  131.             Creative Sound Blaster _MIDI Synthesizer
  132.             Creative Sound Blaster 1.5 Wave and MIDI   ;or 2.0 for SB 2.0 card
  133.             MIDI Mapper
  134.             Timer
  135.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  136.             [MCI] Sound
  137.  
  138.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must install the
  139.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows
  140.       manual for more details).
  141.  
  142.    4. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the Program
  143.       Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command line box.  Examine the
  144.       [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.  They should look something like
  145.       this:
  146.  
  147.               [drivers]
  148.               Timer=timer.drv
  149.               Midimapper=midimap.drv
  150.               MIDI=sbfm.drv
  151.               Wave=sb15snd.drv    ;Note - a v1.5 card was assumed.  If you
  152.               MIDI1=sb15snd.drv   ;have a v2.0 card, change to sb20snd.drv
  153.

  156.               int=7
  157.               dmachannel=1
  158.  
  159.    5. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or you get the error
  160.       message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI file, be sure
  161.       you have the following settings in the [mci] section of SYSTEM.INI
  162.  
  163.               [mci]
  164.               WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  165.               Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  166.  
  167.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install the driver(s)
  168.       using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows manual for
  169.       instructions).  Do not type in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because
  170.       the files have to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  173. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  174. --------------------------------------------------
  175.  
  176.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.0 with
  177.    Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some special notes to
  178.    consider.
  179.  
  180.    1. If you have a line which reads "device=vsbd.386" in the [386Enh] section
  181.       of SYSTEM.INI, please delete it.  This is an old driver which has been
  182.       replaced by VSBPD.386.  The new driver will not work correctly until this
  183.       line is removed.
  184.  
  185.    2. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest MMCBOX.EXE,
  186.       MMJBOX.EXE, SBFM.DRV and SB15SND.DRV (or SB20SND.DRV for Sound Blaster
  187.       2.0) have been copied to your hard disk.  Check the size and date of
  188.       these files against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  You
  189.       can delete any older versions that you find in your system.

  192. VI. Important notes
  193. -------------------

  198.    1. The drivers found in the file CREATE.EXE on Microsoft's BBS and in the
  199.       Microsoft Forum on CompuServe are not the latest drivers for Windows 3.1
  200.       and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  201.  
  202.    2. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit are not
  203.       the lastest drivers and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  204.  
  205.    3. We are including drivers that make use of Device Virtualization.  These
  206.       drivers will allow DOS Apps that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced
  207.       Mode.
  208.  
  209.       Please make sure that a line reading "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the
  210.       [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  211.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure the file VSBPD.386
  212.       is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  If it is not, copy it from the
  213.       Drivers Disk.
  214.  
  215.    4. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows 3.0 with
  216.       Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  They will check the
  217.       Windows version and use the correct Sound Blaster section name to access
  218.       the settings in the SYSTEM.INI.
  219.  
  220.    5. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the SBFM.DRV, please use the
  221.       MIDI MAPPER icon under Control Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  222.  
  223.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the drum channel.
  224.       If you are having problems with the FM synth not sounding "right", try
  225.       modifying the configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  226.
